10/21-10/25

Goals for the Week

  • Wrap up our understanding of macromolecules
  • Describe the biological importance of enzymes
  • Discuss terminology specific to enzyme-mediated reactions
  • Design an experiment that investigates the role of an enzyme

SEPs
  • Asking questions and defining problems
  • Developing and using models
  • Planning and carrying out investigations
  • Analyzing and interpreting data
  • Using mathematical and computational reasoning
  • Constructing explanations and designing solutions
  • Engaging in argument from evidence
  • Obtaining, evaluating and communicating information

Monday

On a sheet of large paper, please list EVERYTHING you know about macromolecules.  This might include the following:
  • Structure
  • Function
  • Examples
While you are working in a group on this, each of you will be individually assessed on your content knowledge.  Each group member should contribute their thoughts with a different color marker.  You will have 15 minutes to complete this task!

Introduction to Enzymes
  • What are enzymes?
  • Why are they important to biological reactions?
  • Observe a common enzyme-mediated reaction and discuss terminology specific to enzymes
Please have Graphical Analysis installed on your Chromebook

Tuesday - Wednesday

Using what you know about the enzyme catalase and the breakdown of Hydrogen peroxide design an experiment to answer the question

"How can we determine if enzymes are facilitators to a chemical reaction or part of the chemical reaction?"

Successful whiteboards will share the following:
  1. Picture of the reaction
  2. Graphical representation of the reaction
  3. Mathematical representation of the reaction
  4. Written explanation, answering the question
Thursday - Friday
New phenomenon in our Africa storyline!
  • What are these elephants doing?
  • What are limiting factors and how can they influence populations?
